Detroit Coalition of Reason - The Story

It all began in the summer of 2009 when I learned that my long time acquaintance and friend, Fred Edwords, became the Director of the newly founded United Coalition of Reason. The mission of the United CoR Is to raise the visibility and sense of unity among local groups in the community of reason, to create a national dialogue on the role of nontheists in American society, and to improve the way that nontheists are perceived by average Americans.

To address this issue the United CoR was incorporated to provide funding for billboards/bus signs and expertise to help local groups cooperate toward the goal of raising their public profile and I wanted Michigan to become a partner in this venture, thus the birth of Detroit CoR.  We began with three core groups - Michigan Atheists, Center For Inquiry of Michigan and Detroit Atheists Meet-up and Ruthe Milan agreed to accept the awesome task of Coordinating our coalition.  Kudos, Ruthe!

Don't Believe in God signs appeared on Detroit area SMART busses March 1 and will remain through March 28, 2010.  The routes traveled are vast and varied including Telegraph between Southland Center and Pontiac; Southfield - Orchard Ridge; Northwestern Hwy; and much more.  To see route maps from the Oakland County Terminal go to http://www.smartbus.org/Smart/Ride%2OSMART/Route1.aspx

Detroit CoR has grown since our beginning in December 2009 and to see our current member groups go to DetroitCoR.org  Our wish is to see many more Michigan Coalitions of Reason. Want to start a Coalition of Reason in your neighborhood?  Get in touch with DetroitCoR.org or Fred Edwords at fredwords@unitedcor.org   We can help.  Together we can move forward with unity and purpose.
